Russian Poker: rules and whether you can win at it

What is Russian poker

Russian poker is a type of card game.  It combines elements of blackjack and five-card draw poker. The goal of the game is to beat the dealer's hand in strength.

Russian poker is played against the croupier

There's no confrontation with other players at the table. There's no board with community cards either. Russian poker belongs to the list of casino gambling games. It isn't placed in the same category as Texas Hold'em or Omaha. For example, Pokerdom moved Russian poker to the Casino tab rather than to the sections with regular card games.

Russian Poker is played with a 52-card deck. Jokers aren't used in the game. In rare cases, Russian poker uses a 36-card deck, which changes the rules. A short deck speeds up the game and changes the odds of hitting combinations. Russian Poker isn't a standalone casino game but a variation of Caribbean poker. In Russian poker, you can exchange cards or buy a sixth card. Strong combinations earn an additional reward. There are no betting streets or the ability to bluff in Russian Poker.

How to play Russian poker

There are no unified rules for Russian poker. The terms of the game are set by the specific casino. Up to 3 people, not counting the dealer, play at a Russian Poker table. The seats are called boxes. One player can occupy all 3 seats and take part in the showdown against the same dealer hand.

Before the start of the hand, players and the dealer post an ante. In a casino, its size is determined by a sign on the table. Online, betting limits are shown when the game is launched. Opponents are dealt 5 cards each. They are hidden from the other participants in the hand. Everyone sees one of the cards in the croupier's hand. The remaining 4 cards lie face down. Based on their hand and the dealer's exposed card, the player:

  • Folds. The player exits the hand and loses the ante.

  • Exchanges cards. You can replace from 1 to 5 cards. To exchange them, you need to post an ante. If a player paid for a card and received the same rank of a different suit, the dealer will replace the new card for free.

  • Buys a sixth card. If you post another ante, you can receive an additional card.

If a player continues in the hand and wants to reach the showdown, they must pay a doubled ante. After the player's bet, the dealer shows the final combination. If the croupier has a weaker holding, the player wins the hand. If the combinations are equal, the entire pot carries over to the next hand. If the dealer is ahead, they take the player's money.

The final winnings are affected by the player's decisions during the hand. Exchanging and buying cards reduce the player's income from the hand. Russian poker also has a special qualification rule for the dealer's hand. With a combination worse than AKxxx, the croupier declares "no game." The player is paid the ante at 1 : 1 and the bet is returned. When the dealer doesn't have a hand to qualify, the player can buy them an additional card for an ante. If the new card strengthened the croupier, the opponents compare combinations according to standard rules.

The size of the winnings is affected by the player's combination. A win with one pair brings a 1 : 1 payout. Four of a kind pays more generously: 20 : 1. Here are the multipliers in effect in Russian Poker:

Combination

Payout

AKxxx or 1 pair

1 : 1

2 pairs

2 : 1

Set

3 : 1

Straight

4 : 1

Flush

5 : 1

Full house

7 : 1

Four of a kind

20 : 1

Straight flush

50 : 1

Royal flush

100 : 1

What is insurance. With a straight or better, a player can take insurance. It protects the player from the situation where the dealer fails to qualify. If by showdown the casino's representative doesn't even have AKxxx, then instead of the increased payout for a straight, the player will only get the ante. Features of insurance:

  • it's taken before the final combinations are revealed;

  • it costs from 50% to 100% of the ante;

  • if the croupier does have a hand of AKxxx or better — the insurance is forfeited.

Insurance is worth taking in a situation where the player has made a premium hand, like four of a kind or a royal flush. However, over the long run it will increase losses, not profit.

How to win at Russian poker

You can't read your opponent's hand and make a great call or pull off a flashy bluff in Russian Poker.

Russian poker uses the same hand-ranking rules as Hold'em or Omaha

The casino's representative plays by a template, which leaves the player minimal room to maneuver. To improve your chances against the house, you need to:

  • Avoid paid options. Don't spend the ante exchanging cards with a weak starting hand. Invest money in combinations like two pair or a straight draw. If the right card comes, the increased reward will compensate for the additional ante. Buying a sixth card after a failed exchange isn't worth it. Exception: a situation with a draw to a straight flush or royal flush.

  • Enter the hand with good hands. All players post an ante before the start of the hand. It's smarter to throw away a bad hand and wait for a more promising combination than to invest money in an exchange. The same approach works as in Texas Hold'em, Omaha, or seven-card stud. Trash hands will bring more losses than profit.

  • Account for the dealer's exposed card. If the casino's representative has a king or ace, their chance to qualify rises. We recommend not taking insurance.

While playing Russian poker, remember psychological balance. In Russian Poker it's harder to go on tilt because there's no battle with other opponents. However, a string of losses can drive you crazy. Keep your emotions under control so you don't give your money away to the casino.

Where to play Russian poker online

Russian Poker can't be classed among popular card games. It isn't available on most platforms. Its place is taken by a similar game — Oasis Poker or Caribbean Poker. The rules of Caribbean poker resemble Russian, but it has no stage of exchanging cards for an additional fee. You also can't buy a sixth card. You can play Oasis Poker for money on Pokerdom and RedStar Casino. The game is placed on the Casino tab. On RedStar, Oasis Poker can be found in the Table Games category.

Look for the game in the "Casino" section

Some platforms let you play Russian poker for free. They don't dazzle with vivid design, but they give you the chance to memorize the rules and get an idea of the game. There are also several Russian poker apps for mobile devices.

Why Hold'em is better than Russian poker

In Russian poker, the player is up against the casino. Over the long run, Russian Poker brings income only to the house. The rules and mechanics of the game leave no chance to come out ahead. The casino also offers no-limit Texas Hold'em tables. However, in NL Hold'em the player battles opponents, not the house. The operator earns from the rake on each pot — the identity of the hand's winner doesn't matter. If a player shows a high level of skill, they take their opponents' money. Other advantages of Texas Hold'em:

  • Prize money. The World Series of Poker champion gets not only a precious bracelet but also several million dollars. For example, Michael Mizrachi was paid $10,000,000 in 2025. No one holds Russian Poker tournaments, so no-limit Hold'em is far ahead. Winnings in Russian poker, in an optimistic scenario, can be compared to a lucky session at mid stakes cash.

  • Interest. NL Hold'em is an unpredictable game with enormous variance. The same hand can be played in a dozen ways. Opponents' actions create thousands of unique situations. With the first decision at the table, a player can go all-in or take part in all betting rounds and end the hand at showdown. We'll separately note the chance to catch an opponent with a weak hand or pull off a crazy bluff.

  • The opportunity to study. To reach the heights in Texas Hold'em, you need to spend thousands of hours studying. The game offers a huge number of topics to learn: preflop ranges, 3-bet pots, barreling, the battle of the blinds. In Hold'em there's always potential for growth. In Russian poker, learning comes down to basic recommendations, memorizing winning combinations and payout sizes.

Russian Poker is a game with a negative expected value. In it, a good player is distinguished from a bad one by the speed at which they lose money. In NL Hold'em a strong player will show a profit over the long run.

How to learn to play real poker

A large selection of learning materials is one of the main arguments in favor of Texas Hold'em. The following help raise your level of play: books, video courses, training software, hand analysis with other players, streams by professionals, sessions with a coach. Let's discuss each method separately.

Books. Beginning players have hundreds of works at their disposal. Not all books are equally useful. For example, "Super System" by Doyle Brunson, groundbreaking for its time, won't be of much use. Poker has moved far ahead, and the advice of the ten-time WSOP champion won't let you win in 2026. However, among printed publications there are real gems. Among them we'd include "Easy Poker Math" by Roy Rounder and "The Mental Game of Poker" by Jared Tendler. The first work introduces the basic math of the game, the second — the key psychological concepts.

On our YouTube channel we publish analysis of won tournaments, interviews with popular players, and reviews of poker software

Video courses. The internet offers thousands of training videos about poker. You can find suitable material on any topic within a few minutes. The language barrier won't be an obstacle either: modern browsers translate videos by foreign authors well. FunFarm also releases training materials — subscribe so you don't miss anything.

Software. One of the most effective learning methods is analyzing mistakes in special programs. Working in solvers, poker calculators, and push/fold trainers helps identify and fix most strategy gaps. Read more about useful poker programs in our article.

Hand analysis with colleagues. Other players can help you spot mistakes in your game. Players often create themed chats where they break down their own and others' hands. A colleague will point out a hidden flaw or suggest an alternative line.

Watching streams. Many professionals stream their play on Twitch and Kick. They comment on their actions and answer questions from the chat. Any viewer can ask an experienced player for advice for free. FunFarm coaches also play live. Follow the streams to pick up experience.

Working with a coach. A qualified mentor will analyze a player's database, point out flaws in thinking, and put together an individual development plan. Sessions with a coach often allow you to quickly get past the low stakes and reach a new level. When choosing a mentor, a number of questions arise:

  • how to assess their skills;

  • whether their style will suit the student;

  • how much the training course costs.

Picking a good coach is a challenge for an experienced player. For a beginner, making the right decision is even harder. If you don't know where to start, we recommend taking the free FF Start course. In it, we not only give the basics of theory but also reinforce them in practice.

FAQ

How does Russian poker differ from Texas Hold'em?

Russian poker is played against the casino. It has no confrontation with other players, no betting streets, and no community cards on the board. The goal is to make a stronger combination than the dealer's. In Texas Hold'em you beat other players through skill.

How can you improve your chances of winning at Russian poker?

Don't invest in weak starting hands, use paid options sparingly, account for the dealer's exposed card. Don't buy insurance — it increases losses.

Why can't you earn consistently with Russian poker?

Russian Poker is a game with a negative expected value: the payout rules are designed from the start to profit the casino. There's nowhere in it to show skill.

What is qualification?

If the dealer hasn't made the minimum completed combination from 5 cards, then they haven't qualified. The rules of the game state that the casino's representative cannot go to showdown with a holding below AKxxx. When the dealer doesn't have it, they declare "no game" and the player gets the minimum payout.
