Seven Card Stud (7 Card Stud): Poker Without Community Cards

Many fans of card games put an equals sign between "poker" and "Texas Hold'em." A two-card starting hand, a shared board, flop, turn, river — mandatory elements of a hand, aren't they? Actually — no. Many poker variants offer different rules. Among them is Seven Card Stud. Let's discuss 7 Card Stud.

What is Stud

Stud is one of the variants of poker. The main features of this card game look like this:

  • during a hand, opponents are dealt 7 cards each;

  • some of the cards are visible to all players at the table, some are hidden;

  • there is no board with community cards.

A three-card starting hand, the absence of a shared board, and the betting order are the main differences between 7 Card Stud and other poker variants

Seven Card Stud was invented in the USA. The game gained popularity during the Civil War between the North and the South. The peak of interest in Seven Card Stud came during World War II. While at the start of the 20th century Seven Card Stud and Draw Poker competed for the title of the leading card game, from 1945 onward Stud led the way. The dominance of 7 Card Stud was interrupted by NL Hold'em in the 1980s.

Stud is an umbrella term for several card games. The greatest audience interest is drawn to the version with seven cards and standard hand rankings. However, there are also alternative variants of Stud Poker. Among them:

  • Stud Hi-Lo. Half the pot goes to the holder of the best hand at showdown, half to the worst. The top low hand includes 5 cards of different ranks, none higher than an eight. The rules of the game treat the ace as a low card.

  • Razz. The goal of the game is to show the worst hand at showdown. The first bet is made by the player with the best exposed card. In the classic version of Seven Card Stud, the betting is started by the holder of the worst exposed card.

  • Mississippi Stud. A variation of poker with seven cards. What distinguishes it from regular Stud is the absence of betting between fourth and fifth streets. Another feature is that all players see the last card.

The games are also distinguished by their betting rules. In Limit 7 Card Stud, the sizes of the bet and raise are restricted. In the pot-limit variant, the bet depends on the size of the pot. That's why it's easier for players to grow the pot.

There are more nuances in the rules of Seven Card Stud than in Texas Hold'em, which reduces the inflow of newcomers into the game. However, Stud is popular among professional poker players. The game is great for taking a break from NL Hold'em or PLO.

What hand rankings look like in 7 Card Stud

In Seven Card Stud, the same hand ranking rules apply as in Texas Hold'em or Omaha. The final hand includes the best 5 cards out of 7. You can use both exposed and hidden cards. Let's look at each hand separately.

High card. If none of the contenders for the pot have even made a pair, the money will go to the hand with the highest-ranking card. For example, at showdown Alex showed AJT97, and Kristen — KQT83. With the higher ace, the pot goes to Alex.

Pair. A combination of two identical cards forms a pair. For example, with the hand KT993 the player has a pair of nines. When hands are equal, the outcome of the hand is decided by the kicker. The kicker is the best of the cards that didn't make it into the completed hand. Say at showdown Alex showed AJJ26, and Kristen — QJJ89. The opponents both made a pair of jacks, but the money goes to Alex thanks to his higher kicker.

Two pair. Two different pairs in one hand. For example, the hand K8877 includes pairs of eights and sevens. When comparing hands, you first look at the higher pair, then at the lower one. If opponents reach showdown with identical hands, the fate of the pot is determined by the kicker.

Set. Three cards of the same rank. The strength of the hand is determined by the rank of the trips. For example, the hand J7727 makes a set of sevens. If several players make sets, the hand is won by the holder of the highest one. In 7 Card Stud, a set of aces is considered the best starting hand.

Straight. Five cards of different suits in sequence. If several players catch straights, the pot goes to the strongest one. Say Alex has 98765, and Kristen — 87654. Both players have hands of the same rank, but Alex's straight is higher.

In the regular version of 7 Card Stud, classic hand ranking rules apply. In Razz and Hi-Lo, the pots are won by the worst hands

Flush. Five cards of the same suit. When both players show flushes, the hand with the higher card wins. Example: Alex's flush Q♣9♣7♣5♣3♣ beats Kristen's flush J♥9♥8♥5♥2♥, because the queen is higher than the jack. At showdown in Seven Card Stud, all suits are equal.

Full house. A combination of a set and a pair. The decisive role is played by the rank of the set. For example, KKK44 beats QQQAA, since the king is higher than the queen.

Quads. Four cards of the same rank. If both opponents have quads, the pot goes to the holder of the higher rank.

Straight flush. Five consecutive cards of the same suit. The higher straight flush wins.

Royal flush. The highest straight flush from ace to ten of the same suit. The highest and unbeatable hand in Seven Card Stud.

How a hand plays out in Seven Card Stud

A Seven Card Stud table can seat from 2 to 8 players. The absence of 9-max and 10-max is due to the number of cards in the deck. In 7 Card Stud, opponents do not post small and big blinds. The starting pot is formed from antes. They are paid by all participants in the game. The ante size is set in the range from 10% to 25% of the big bet. Example: at a $10/$20 table, each player puts $2 into the pot.

At the start of a hand, all players are dealt 3 cards each: 2 face down, 1 face up. The holder of the worst exposed card makes a forced bet. In Seven Card Stud it's called the "bring-in." He can put either a small or a big bet into the pot. For example, at the $10/$20 limit, he invests either $10 or $20 into the pot. He cannot decline the bet. If several players have identical cards, the bring-in is made by the holder of the weakest suit. The hierarchy from strongest to weakest looks like this: spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs.

The first betting round in 7 Card Stud is called "third street." The rest of the hand proceeds clockwise according to classic rules with: folds, calls, and raises.

Online has automated many aspects of the hand. The poker room's client independently determines the order of play and sets the betting limits

Before the second betting round, opponents each receive 1 more face-up card. Now the first to act is the holder of the best exposed hand. In most cases the order of play is determined by the high card, but sometimes two exposed cards form a pair. The first player can bet only the small bet. Then the next player clockwise makes a decision. He can: call the bet, make a raise, or fold his cards. The second betting round = fourth street.

The third betting round repeats the previous one with a single exception: the holder of the best hand of 3 exposed cards puts the big bet into the pot. At a $10/$20 limit table he bets $20. The third betting round = fifth street.

The fourth round follows the same formula: the player with the strongest exposed hand of 4 cards bets first. The fourth betting round = sixth street.

The hand is concluded by the fifth betting round. In it, players are dealt the last card. Opponents do not see it. The first to act is the holder of the best hand of 4 exposed cards. The fifth betting round is called the "river." At the end of the hand, opponents show their final 5-card hands. The first to reveal a hand is the player who raised last.

How to play Stud Poker: basic recommendations

The absence of a shared board and the mechanic with exposed cards set Seven Card Stud apart from other poker variants. To win at Seven Card Stud, you need to be extra attentive. A player must compare opponents' exposed cards with their actions and assess their own chances of catching the best hand. Don't count on the help of software — trackers don't gather statistics from Seven Card Stud tables. Other recommendations for Stud Poker:

  • Enter hands with strong starting hands. The best hand at the start of play is considered to be a set of AAA. It's worth getting into the battle for the pot with: sets, strong pocket pairs, three cards to a flush draw, and a straight draw.

  • Memorize the cards of opponents who have folded. In poker, any information is useful. Folded cards are not returned to the deck, so a good memory can predetermine the outcome of a hand. If an opponent's exposed cards hint at a flush draw, but the player noticed many of his outs among the cards opponents folded, then the probability of seeing the flush decreases. The reverse approach is also valid: play more aggressively with a draw if your outs are live and no one has shown them.

  • Watch your opponents and take notes. Not many people play exotic poker variants. A narrow circle of opponents lets you study them better. Memorize the features of their strategy: with which hands they enter a pot, how they bluff, in what style they play draws.

The classic recommendations also work in Seven Card Stud: play within your bankroll, analyze hands and look for mistakes, and devote time to psychology.

Where to play Stud Poker

Seven Card Stud lags behind Texas Hold'em, Omaha, and even short-deck poker in popularity. 7 Card Stud isn't available on most platforms. Previously, the best place for rare poker variants was PokerStars. However, the room revised its policy and removed Seven Card Stud from the lobby. They bring it back during big series. For example, 11 tournaments for 7 Card Stud and its offshoots found a place in the WCOOP-2025 schedule. The same number of Stud events were included in SCOOP-2025. Outside of major festivals, Seven Card Stud is forgotten. It's also absent from the cash tab.

In the past, Stud Poker tables were offered by 888Poker and partypoker. Both platforms removed this rare poker variant from the lobby

As of December 2025, you can play Seven Card Stud on:

  • PokerKing. To find Seven Card Stud, you need to open the Cash Games tab and go to Other Games. Players have at their disposal regular 7 Card Stud and its Hi/Low variation. The room offers tables with stakes from $0.04/$0.08 to $5/$10.  Stud Poker doesn't impress with big traffic, but a couple of tables can be found in the evening. PokerKing doesn't run 7 Card Stud tournaments.

  • Phenom Poker. A newcomer to the industry promotes rare poker variants. In its lobby you can find: Badugi, Draw Poker, mixed games, six-card Omaha. Seven Card Stud is there too, albeit in minimal quantity. Every day the room organizes 2 Razz tournaments. Sometimes you can also find opponents at the cash tables.

Seven Card Stud is also played at the most prestigious live festival — the World Series of Poker. In 2025, 100 tournaments were held at the WSOP. Seven events were played by Stud Poker rules. One of the tournaments was won by the creator of Phenom Poker — Brian Rast. He took the bracelet and $1,246,200. The largest Stud event was won by Qinghai Peng. For winning the tournament with a $10,000 buy-in, he was paid $1,729,800.

Why NL Hold'em is better than Seven Card Stud

Seven Card Stud is one of the most interesting poker variants. However, it long ago lost its audience and forfeited its leading positions in the industry. Many professionals don't know the rules of Seven Card Stud. Among poker newcomers, almost no one has heard of Seven Card Stud. The place of Stud Poker was taken by No-Limit Texas Hold'em. The main reason for NL Hold'em's popularity is the simplicity of its rules. Hold'em is easier to master than Stud. NL Hold'em also has other advantages:

  • Accessibility. No-Limit Texas Hold'em is the basic game for online poker. There isn't a single platform on the internet that doesn't offer NL Hold'em. Tournaments with the largest guarantees are run by Hold'em. The most expensive cash is played by NL Hold'em rules. Finding rooms with Seven Card Stud is no easy task. Even harder is finding opponents at the tables. Stud Poker lags in popularity behind not only NL Hold'em and PLO, but also short-deck and pineapple.

  • Prize money. There's more money in No-Limit Texas Hold'em. Example: the winner of the largest WSOP 7 Card Stud tournament took $1,729,800. The champion of the main NL Hold'em tournament carried off $10,000,000. The difference is also visible online: the guarantee of the most expensive Seven Card Stud event at SCOOP was $40,000. The most expensive SCOOP tournament was held by Texas Hold'em. Its prize pool reached $3,000,000.

  • Fame. The entire poker industry knows about Michael Mizrachi's success at the WSOP. Few remember the winners of individual 7 Card Stud tournaments. There are significantly more NL Hold'em fans in the world, which is why the names of leading Hold'em players are better known.

  • Opportunity to learn and grow. Books, training courses, and training programs will help you break into the top players of No-Limit Texas Hold'em. Newcomers have thousands of educational materials at their disposal. You can improve your NL Hold'em playing skills endlessly. Seven Card Stud is harder to learn due to the shortage of sources.

Phenom Poker promotes rare card game variants. However, the room can't boast of big traffic

Conclusion

Seven Card Stud is one of the most interesting poker variants. The mechanic with hidden and exposed cards creates a special dynamic and sets the game apart from Hold'em. However, we don't recommend starting a poker career with 7 Card Stud. The game has almost no audience on the internet, and without practice you won't be able to progress. To make money in poker with Stud, you need to grow to the WSOP level. It's easier to pave the path to Las Vegas through Hold'em. The FF program will help you take your first steps.
